About Post-operative Physiotherapy

Post-operative Physiotherapy is a branch of Physiotherapy that's all about helping you recover after going through surgery. Just like any other specialization within Physiotherapy, a Post-operative Physiotherapist will assess, diagnose, and implement a personalized treatment plan based on up-to-date scientific evidence. The main goal is to restore functional independence and optimize physical well-being.

In the context of in-home physiotherapy, Post-operative Physiotherapy aims at these goals, especially for post-surgical patients who've been discharged from a hospital setting to continue their recovery process at home.

Physical rehabilitation after surgery encompasses a wide range of surgical procedures. Common types of surgeries requiring Post-operative Physiotherapy include:

  •  Orthopedic Surgery: Focuses on the musculoskeletal system (muscles, bones, joints). These include Spinal surgery, Joint replacements (Knee, hip, Shoulder), ligament reconstructions (i.e. ACL Reconstruction), Rotator Cuff Repairs, Muscle Repairs.
  • Neurosurgery: Focuses on the nervous system. These include Brain surgery, spinal surgery, and peripheral nerve repairs.
  • Thoracic Surgery: Involves surgical procedures focusing on organs inside the thoracic cavity(chest). Common types include Heart surgery (cardiac rehabilitation), Lung surgery.

Our "Vibe"/Approach

Our Physiotherapists have an array of treatment methods at their disposal to deal with a range of complications associated with different forms of surgery. Common complications include pain, low exercise tolerance due to deconditioning, faulty movement patterns, limited joint range of motion, and muscle tightness.

Manual Therapy and Corrective Exercise form the core of our practice as key treatment methods to address these complications. Manual therapy involves the use of various hands-on methods to effect therapeutic changes in various structures. These include massage and joint manipulation techniques. On the other hand, corrective exercise involves the use of exercise to address various postural and movement problems after surgery.
